Ethnicity & crime
Who appears in youth proceedings relative to the population
Police record a single (unique) ethnicity. Census counts people in every group they identify with. That difference matters: Māori who also identify as European are Māori in Police data and both in population data. Filters change the slice, not the recording rule.
Highest over-representation
Māori 2.54×
Crime share divided by 10–19 population share.
Māori (national, unfiltered)
2.5×
51.8% of proceedings vs 20.4% of youth.
Slice size
14,910
All 10–19 proceedings, latest year.
Population % vs proceedings %
Same groups, two denominators. Brass = crime share, slate = population share.
